Family Games – The Classics

Spend time with your family the old fashioned way with family games. Even though my siblings and I didn’t grow up in a home with financial abundance, we had a wealth of good times. When I was a child, there was no such thing as the internet or computers. When we played games, it was a family adventure. We would gather around the dining table and play all sorts of games.

Family Games – The Classics

Monopoly was a family favorite but there are so many board games available to choose from. You’ll always have something to do with family and friends when you have classic board games at your fingertips.

I’ll list my all time favorite family games here so that you can easily find them when you are looking to add some to your collection. And you really should collect them all!
There were seven children in my family and we would spend hours together playing Monopoly. Keep in mind, board games are not just about the game, it’s about the conversations, the laughter, the building of relationships. When you spend time with your children and the focus is on fun, you can still have all the important conversations with them about life. When your children are playing games with you, they have no idea they are also learning valuable life lessons. With Monopoly, you’re teaching them about finances and making good choices. You’re also teaching them that things don’t always go like we want them to go. We suffer setbacks but we don’t quit. We take forward steps in life but we also get knocked back sometimes.

Sometimes I thought I would never get around the board fast enough to buy up property before it was all taken. Often a player would get lucky and land on all the high value property and buy everything up before I made it completely around the board; but that would be the very person who lost the game in the end because they did not spend wisely. That is a good lesson for life. You can’t just go out and throw your money at everything you come across. That’s just being greedy. We have to be willing to allow others to succeed in life too!

Ahhh! I Can’t forget UNO.  This is another one of our family favorites. We played all sorts of card games when I was growing up; but UNO was the one geared more for children. When I say we played cards, I’m talking serious card games: Dirty Hearts, Gin Rummy, Pinochle, Spades… We played them all!  I didn’t realize it at the time, but when we were spending so much time together around the table playing cards, we were creating a lifetime of happy memories. My son shared one of his happiest memories in a video I made more my mom’s 80th birthday. I’ll post that so you can see what I’m talking about.

OMG! Battleship…

I have so many happy memories of my children playing this game with my mom. My mother LOVED playing board games and she never ran out of willing participants. Between her seven children and then later her grandchildren, there was always someone to play any number of games with. Grandparents make the best of friends for young children.

Then there are the games that only the children like to play with each other. I’m going to stop talking about games and just share the rest of my favorites below.

I remember my brothers playing this game during the holidays.
